Frequently Asked Questions
What is the local currency, and are credit cards widely accepted?
The currency is New Zealand Dollar (NZD).
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. It is advisable to carry some cash for small purchases and in remote areas. All major credit cards are recognised, and there is EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale) available almost everywhere. There is an extensive 24-hour cash machine network in most towns and small villages. If not, the local petrol station will often fill this void. Trading banks are generally open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
