Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim back tax in New Zealand?

Unlike some countries, New Zealand's tax laws do not allow visitors to claim back GST on items bought during their stay. New Zealand does not offer a GST (Goods and Services Tax) refund for tourists on general purchases. However, tourists can take advantage of duty-free shopping at registered retailers, particularly at the airport when departing. These purchases are GST-free but must be collected at the airport on the day of your departure.

If you want to make tax-free purchases, look for shops that display the Auckland Airport logo or other tax-free shopping signs. Keep in mind that once you've paid GST on general purchases in New Zealand, it cannot be refunded later.
